About the Book
In China, love and women have always been problematic topics in upper-class literature and thought. During certain periods, however, the literati overcame their Confucian hesitations and explored these subjects with an avid fascination. During the Six Dynasties and Tang, the newly emerging genres of zhiguai and chuanqi tales became vehicles for an unprecedented interest in exploring the issue of love and women. These stories form a crucial chapter in the history of love in China and would provide much of the foundation for later explorations, as, for example, seen in the drama and novels of the Late Imperial period. Love and Women in Early Chinese Fiction is a study of the key themes, topics, and approaches found in these tales which range from fantasy, fear and anxiety, to philosophical debate on the place of the feminine in the Chinese society.
